{"id":76,"date":"2009-05-11T19:28:09","date_gmt":"2009-05-12T02:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tibetantailor.com\/?p=76"},"modified":"2009-05-12T21:11:46","modified_gmt":"2009-05-13T04:11:46","slug":"information-just-wants-to-be-free-its-not-about-the","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tibetantailor.com\/?p=76","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Information Just Wants to be Free&#8221; &#8211; It&#8217;s not about the $"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Information Just Wants to be Free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Wikipedia has a good <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Information_wants_to_be_free\">history of ways different people have used th<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maya.com\/portfolio\/toward-the-universal-database-u-forms-and-the-via-repository\"><\/a>at expression, though not the way I am seeing it.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maya Design &amp; Viz did some excellent thinking around information and published a number of whitepapers around the turn of the century that still influence how I think about information. A key enabling concept is <em>universal uniqueness of informati<\/em><em>on<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This uniqueness allows the development of tools that are information-centric, not document-centric \u2014 where information is trapped in or tightly bound by the software that created it. <strong>Freeing information<\/strong> allows software to be crafted that uses data in exactly the ways humans want.&#8221; &#8211; Viz<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Wow &#8211; It&#8217;s not about the money.<\/strong> It is about free from a particular DB or software\u00a0structure. It is about being\u00a0free from the old structure, legacy systems, walled gardens, and being locked down. Free to be used beyond the DB structure. \u00a0This is way beyond the MVC\u00a0architectural\u00a0pattern and into Maya&#8217;s very cool concept of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maya.com\/portfolio\/toward-the-universal-database-u-forms-and-the-via-repository\">U-Form<\/a>. \u00a0This is really cool stuff and has helped me the most in area of corporate dashboards and business intelligence applications that pull information from both internal operations and from &#8220;scanning&#8221; or &#8220;sensing&#8221; external data sources.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Information Just Wants to be Free Wikipedia has a good history of ways different people have used that expression, though not the way I am seeing it.
